How to Install a WiFi Bird Box Camera When There’s No Wi-Fi? (Part 2)

In the previous blog, we talked about how to set up a WiFi bird box camera without a router, by connecting to its built-in hotspot (also known as the AP mode). But how well does this hotspot work? How far can it reach? What are the limitations?

Hot Spot Range: Up to 10 Meters in Open Areas

Unlike home Wi-Fi routers, the camera’s hotspot is designed for short-range use. Our WiFi bird box cameras can reach up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) in an open area. The “open area” means there are no walls, trees, or large objects between your camera and the device you’re using to connect to it (like your phone, tablet or PC).

Although some field tests showed the signal can reach 20 to 30 meters, we strongly recommend staying within 10 meters to ensure a smooth livestream. Because signal quality drops quickly after 10 meters, especially when there are walls, fences and plants. At longer distances, the connection may become weak, video may freeze, and the app may disconnect.



What Affects the Signal Strength?

Many things can reduce the signal strength and stop it completely. Here are the main factors:

1.Walls and Buildings

Thick walls, especially brick, stone or concrete, can block or heavily reduce the signal strength. When it hits a wall, part of the signal gets blocked, absorbed or reflecyed. Even wooden walls, drywall or glass can make the siganl weaker. In most cases, the camera’s hotspot can only pass through one thin wall, and even then, the range will drop significantly.



2.Trees

Natural obstacles like trees, bushes or tall grass can interfere with the signal strength, especially when wet or dense. Leaves and branches absorb and scatter the signal, causing it to weaken or become unstable. The more foliage between your bird box camera and your device, the harder it is to maintain a strong connection. Even wooden fences or sheds can reduce signal quality. For better performance, place the camera where there’s a clear line of sight, such as in an open area or on a pole.



3.Interference from Other Signals

If your WiFi bird box camera is near other WiFi networks, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones or even microwaves, the siganl may suffer. When too many devices use the same frequency at the same time, their signals overlap and “fight” for space. This is called interference. It’s like trying to talk in a crowded room where everyone’s voice blends together, and it’s hard to hear clearly. That’s why the video may freeze, lag or drop out when other signals are nearby.



4.Low Power Level

If the camera is running on low power (esepcially when you’re using batteries or solar power), it may reduce signal strength to save power. A low battery can make the connection unstable during live streaming. Always make sure your WiFi bird box camera is fully charged or connect to a stable power source, i.e. mains power, when using the AP mode.



5.Weather Conditions

Weather can impact signals, especially in outdoor environments. Rain, snow, fog and high humidity can absord or scatter the signal, reducing range and causing drops. While light weather usually has little effect, heavy rain or thick fog can make the connection weaker as the distance increases.



When to Use the Hotspot (AP Mode)?

1.You Have No Wi-Fi Network Nearby

This is the main reason to use the hotspot. If you’re in the countryside, a large garden or a forest area where you don’t have Interner or a router, the camera’s hotspot lets you connect directly to the camera (less than 10 meters). You can check live video, download recordings and change settings.

2.You Can Walk Near the Camera

Since the hotspot only reaches around 10 meters in open space, you’ll need to bring your phone close to the bird box to connect. This is easy if the camera is in your backyard, garden or balcony, and you can easily walk over to it. Even if it’s a bit farther away, like a schoolyard or on private land, you can still use the AP mode if you’re able to visit regularly.

3.You’re Using the Camera for Temporary Projects

If you’re doing a school project, birdwatching trip, seasonal survey, you probably don’t want to install a new Wi-Fi router just for a few days. Using the camera’s built-in hotspot means faster seeup and no need for extra devices. You can install the WiFi bird box camera, power it on, and start recording right away. As long as you stay with hotspot range, you can watch the live videos directly on your phone without any internet access, making it simple, portable and efficient.



Tips to Get the Best Hotspot Performance

  • Place the camera in a high, open position, away from large metal or concrete objects.
  • If possible, use a larger antenna to improve range.
  • Avoid placing the camera too far from where you plan to use your device.
  • Test the connection before final installation. Walk around and check the signal strength.
  • Don’t forget to save video clips to a memory card inside the camera, so you can download them even if the live connection is weak.
